The Netflix drama, 13 Reasons Why, released at the end of March 2017, is based on Jay Asher’s controversial teen novel of the same name. Netflix recently announced plans to strengthen the current advisory warnings of TV-MA (Mature Audience), due to concerns from educators and mental health experts. The TV-MA rating of the series is due to strong language, intense sexual situations, and intense violence. Programs with TV-MA ratings are specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17.
To help parents/guardians to engage in conversation with their children about this series and the seriousness of the topics covered, including bullying, inappropriate use of social media, underage drinking, rape and suicide, are the following helpful links:

Our very own Mrs. Lauren Matthews, Gifted Resource Teacher, earned the “RichTech Innovation in Education Award” at the 22nd annual RVA Tech Awards Gala (aka “Geek Prom) on May 10. The event was sponsored by the Richmond Technology Council, an organization that connects business, government and education leaders throughout the Commonwealth to further technology innovation and collaboration.
“What a fun evening to dress up, get out on the town, network with other leaders in technology fields around Richmond, and enjoy recognizing others who have worked to expand technology in our community.” she said.
Earlier this year, five students from one of Mrs. Matthews’ 8th Grade Gifted Enrichment classes won a $5,000 “Best In State” Award for an original travel app concept, CITYQUEST, they entered in the 2016-17 Verizon App Challenge —a nationwide contest for middle and high school students.
Mrs. Matthews proudly admits that her “RichTech” Award is proudly sitting at home, on a bookshelf next to her daughter’s books and favorite stuffed hedgehog.

From opera to hip-hop, rock ‘n roll to roller-skate ballet, and cello to the classical ivories, students and staff showed off their top talents during the TMS Talent Show this week. A dozen performers created polished and exciting numbers to entertain and enliven an audience of family and friends. What a marvelous show of special talent, organized by Mr. Kirk Jackson, TMS Band Director.
